Running a small business in the UAE is two jobs. There is the work your customers pay you for, and there is the paperwork that comes with it: invoices to chase, receipts to keep, VAT to file every quarter, and now Corporate Tax as well.

We kept meeting owners who were brilliant at the first job and quietly drowning in the second. Their books lived in spreadsheets, a folder of receipts and the memory of whoever did the accounts last year. The software that was meant to help had been designed for accountants, on a desktop, and it assumed you already knew what a journal entry was.

So we set out to build the opposite. A financial operating system that lives on your phone and on the web, speaks plainly and does the admin when you ask it to. Tell it to send an invoice and it drafts one for you. Photograph a receipt and the bill fills itself in. Ask whether you can afford to hire and it answers from your own numbers.

Underneath, Purpl keeps real double-entry books, prepares the VAT return from them and shows you the transactions behind every figure, so the accountant you work with gets records they can trust. We built it in the Dubai International Financial Centre, for the businesses we see around us every day.
